3D Printed Recovery System
  • Wanted a reliable recovery system that did not use pyro charges

  • Servo locks fairing and parachute in place, tensioning rubber band

  • Opening servo releases fairing and parachute

  • Ejection power can be tuned by varying the number of rubber bands

  • Simple solution that worked more effectively than previous versions

  • Designed in Fusion360

Solenoid Ejection (V1)
  • Used solenoid to eject fairing and parachute

  • Fairing splits in half after ejection, allowing parachute to fall out

  • Required perfect fit to eject reliably without falling off

  • Standard solenoids are not powerful enough for their weight

  • Fairing too small for parachute

Servo Opening (V2)
  • Much larger fairing, opened by servo

  • Required spring to eject parachute

  • Difficult to design spring that was synchronized with fairing opening

  • Ultimately too complex
